Coalgate, the county seat of Coal County, is known for outstanding ranching, farming, and natural resources. Deer and turkey are abundant, as are the bald eagles that congregate in the area each winter. The 45th Infantry Memorial Park is a good place to stop for a lakeside picnic on U.S. 75. The fossil dig just 15 minutes away provide a glimpse into the region’s prehistoric beginnings while the Coal County Historical & Mining Museum preserves the history of the area’s mining days. Each year in September an annual Amish School Auction and consignment sale is held just a few miles out side of town. Items ranging from furniture to quilts made by hand are sold. Visitors travel from all across the country for this unique event.
